2025 LUIGI NONO COMPOSITION PRIZE WINNER

ROBIN HAIGH (IE)

"This submission stood out for its bold and vividly energetic presentation, immediately captivating the listener's attention. Both pieces, FILTCH and AESOP, were lauded for their impressive originality and unique creative voice. The judges highlighted the composer's extremely creative use of timbres and instrumental writing, resulting in surprising color and results.

FILTCH was specifically praised for its original and highly effective trombone opening, demonstrating an innovative approach by referencing club music and executing it flawlessly through acoustic instruments and traditional notation.

Similarly, AESOP 2 struck the panel with its originality of both sound and approach, particularly in the use of electronics. This included vinyl crackle, looped recorder sounds and microtonal synths, combined artfully with accordion and a "hypnotically simplistic" scalar pattern played by an untrained musician. The captivating relationships between the ensemble, soloist, and electronics were noted as a highlight.

The composer effectively engaged with references to varied genres while maintaining an overall sense of "magical incorrectness" and a great sense of humor. The panel agreed that the works were outstandingly developed and delivered, showcasing an exceptionally eclectic and standing-out artistic voice."

Here, the jury's full commentary on these contestants.

The International Chamber Music Competition “Luigi Nono” is addressed to young performers of age between 15 and 29 (for soloists) and between 15 and 33 (for Chamber music).

It is comprised of two sections:

Chamber Music, for performers between the age of 15 and 33 in any formation from duos to octets with at most 1 piano;

• Soloists, for performers between the age of 15 and 29, any instrument and possibly including a piano accompanist.

Since its first editions, the Luigi Nono Competition has achieved high levels of quality and quantity, earning its "international" namesake thanks to the consistent participation  of performers from all over the world, who are deservedly awarded every year.

PRIZES

A first, second and third prize are awarded for both categories. A recital in the subsequent season of concerts organized by “Amici per la Musica” is also awarded to first prize winners in both sections. Other performers can be playing in recitals in the season, if so desired by them and by the Jury. Special prizes are sometimes awarded, such as the "Contemporary Music" prize for the performer of a piece composed after 1950. This is strictly connected with the Luigi Nono Composition Prize whose winner will be asked to compose a piece made for the winner of Contemporary Music Prize. A dedicated concert will be held in the season.
